Album

The latest stage work by Alexander Roberts and Ásrún Magnúsdóttir is titled Album. Album stages seminal music albums in their entirety, in collaboration with local individuals and groups who listen to them. Each performance asks: what is an album? And whose album does it become once it is released into the world?

In Album, one album is staged per performance. Three performances mean three albums. Ten performances mean ten albums. Each album is selected for its connection to the community in which it is performed. In Iceland, this might be Debut by Björk. In Scotland, Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers. Each version is performed by locally engaged participants, alongside a core group of dancers and musicians, the project’s house band. The locals may include devoted fans, a child learning the violin, a local critic, an audience member performing karaoke, a tribute band, a hip hop dance crew, a folk dance society, or a K-pop dancer. In this way, each album is staged by its listeners.
