Current

Current (Straumur) is a new initiative by the Iceland Dance Company that supports emerging choreographers in developing and presenting new work within a professional artistic environment. Following an open call that attracted over one hundred applications, four creators were selected to participate in the project: Sóley Ólafsdóttir, Leevi Mettinen, Hiroki Ichinose, and Sarah Aviaja Hammeken. Together, they present four original short works that form a shared evening of contemporary dance, highlighting new perspectives, artistic voices, and choreographic approaches.

Hiroki Ichinose — US MOVING ON
Us Moving On explores transition, memory, and the experiences we carry with us through life. Inspired by personal experiences of moving between countries and cultures, the work reflects on belongings, relationships, identities, and former versions of ourselves that continue to shape who we become.

Leevi Mettinen — BLUE WALL
Blue Wall explores fear and the many forms it can take. Through a choreography that moves between somatic practices, power dynamics, image-making, and physical expression, two dancers embody both concrete and abstract fears.

Sarah Aviaja Hammeken
Drawing inspiration from Greenlandic myths, Sarah Aviaja Hammeken explores the role of storytelling in shaping values, responsibility, and our relationship to one another and the world around us.

Sóley Ólafsdóttir — THE TREMOR WATCH
The Tremor Watch explores overstimulation, thought patterns, and the body's response to an increasingly demanding world. Moving between control and loss of control, the work examines how the nervous system manifests through movement.
