The Deep
The monologue is based on the true story of Guðlaugur Friðþórsson, a fisherman who survived in the freezing ocean after his boat capsized off the south coast of Iceland. The whole crew, except him, perished. The night is dark. The air temperature is below freezing and the water only 5 degrees above. By rights, he should die from hypothermia. Anyway, he continues to swim for shore through the heavy waves…The performance of the actor, Charles Van de Vyver is sober in a stark, empty space.
Bio
Ragnheiður (Raka) Ásgeirsdóttir has for decades been active in promoting Icelandic playwrights in France. The core of that work are translations of Icelandic plays into French, 17 plays in total, and networking with the French speaking theatre world. She has worked as an assistant director for La Comédie Française, and organized and directed two Icelandic festivals of play reading in the years 2004 and 2019. In 1987 she directed the classical Icelandic play Galdra-Loftur (the Wish) in Paris.
