Tjarnarbíó

A theatre devoted to supporting performing arts in Iceland, of all varieties, with a special focus on independent performance artists.

About the venue

Black box with 180 seats (and a possibility to increase the number to 212 with added rows on the stage). The foyer can also be turned into a performance space with 65 seats. The stage is 8 meters wide and 10 meters deep. The height from the floor up to the lighting grid is six and a half meters. The lighting truss is 8 meters long, 29 cm deep, and the distance between the rails is approximately 2.1 meters.

From the back wall of the stage to the lighting front is 25 meters. You can find more detailed information about the technical equipment on the website.

It is possible to rent Tjarnarbíó, but most commonly artists come in through a collaboration that includes a free rehearsal period, consultancy, and financial support for marketing, in exchange for a split of ticket sales between the venue and the artists. To be accepted as a collaborative project, applicants must respond to an open call, which usually opens as soon as the recipients of artist salaries and performing arts fund grants are announced. The emphasis is on the works being professional, and that amateur theatre groups are not housed in the venue.
