Grant awarded for translations of Icelandic plays 2025

The Performing Arts Centre Iceland’s expert panel has completed its review of applications for translation grants, which were announced on 19 February 2025, with a deadline of 19 March. A total of 11 applications were received, reflecting significant interest in promoting Icelandic plays internationally and a commendable level of ambition and quality among applicants.

The grants support translations of original Icelandic plays into other languages. The goal is to increase the visibility and demand for Icelandic plays abroad, whether through performances, publications, or other types of international presentation and promotion.

This year, grants were awarded to three projects, amounting to a total of ISK 650,000.

The following projects received support:

• “Sjö ævintýri um skömm” (Seven Fairyales of Shame) by Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson, translated into French by Marie Sophie Besson. The play will be published in book form by Maison d’Europe et d’Orient (l’Espace d’un instant) in France.

• Grant amount: ISK 250,000

• “Heim” (Home) by Hrafnhildur Hagalín Guðmundsdóttir, translated into English by Brian FitzGibbon. Readings are planned at the Icelandic embassies in Berlin, Oslo, and Helsinki. The translation will be distributed by Nordiska ApS.

• Grant amount: ISK 250,000

• “Árið án sumars” (The Year Without a Summer) by Marble Crowd, translated into English by Saga Kjerúlf Sigurðardóttir. The play will be performed at Rosendal Teater in Norway in 2026, with promotional activities carried out in collaboration with Reykjavík Dance Festival.

• Grant amount: ISK 150,000

The expert panel extends its sincere thanks for the wide range of high-quality applications. The next call for proposals will be announced later this year.
