New rehearsal and performance space at the National Theatre of Iceland 2030

At Reykjavík Culture Night on 23 August, it was announced that the government has approved the construction of a new rehearsal and performance facility at the National Theatre of Iceland.

The new building, estimated at 2,000–3,000 square metres, will house a flexible black box stage with seating for around 250–320 audience members, a rehearsal hall, a dedicated storage area for costumes and stage props, as well as much-needed improvements to accessibility. The extension will address long-standing shortages of space at the National Theatre and provide better facilities for both artists and audiences.

According to current plans, the new facility will be completed in 2030, coinciding with the National Theatre’s 80th anniversary. The project will have an estimated budget of ISK 2 billion.

This decision marks an important step in strengthening the infrastructure for the performing arts in Iceland, enhancing professional working conditions and expanding public access to diverse theatrical experiences.
